| Under the ‘Work at Height’ Regulations, employers have a duty of care to ensure that work at height is properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out in a safe manner.
Choosing the right powered access equipment will provide a much more flexible, faster, cost-effective and, above all, safer alternative to traditional methods of working at height, such as ladders or scaffolding equipment.
|
 |
Did you know that falls from ladders or scaffolding are responsible for over half of all the fatal injuries recorded in the construction industry?
Additional benefits to using powered access equipment include:
| • |
The ability to complete projects within ever-tighter deadlines |
| • |
Full compliance with Health and Safety and Work at Height legislation |
| • |
Cost effective solutions with minimum labour |
 |
There are a huge variety of machine variants available to suit all application requirements, regardless of the markets you are working in.
Choosing the right machine is the key to safe and efficient working practice. As an AFI customer your hire desk controller, or personal account manager are always on hand to provide expert advice that is specific to your individual requirements.

ABOUT MACHINES …
… Energy Sources
Powered access machines are available with a variety of power sources:
| • |
Battery powered machines - used mainly inside existing buildings, where there is a requirement for quiet, emission-free machines. |
| • |
Diesel-powered equipment - often used externally where its greater power and traction enables a stable working-platform in rugged terrain and difficult conditions. |
| • |
Bi-energy machines – provide greater flexibility of application from a single machine. |
… Operation
Scissor, boom, and mast lifts are self-propelled for easy positioning and the work platform can be raised and lowered, either from the ground or from the elevated work platform.
Many models are designed to be driven safely in the elevated position, thus adding to their flexibility and increasing productivity.
… Scissor Lifts?
Scissor lifts are used in a number of applications where a straight vertical lift is required and are available in a wide range of models with a variety of features e.g.:
| • |
Narrow width units for restricted space applications |
| • |
Non marking tyres for use on internal floors |
| • |
4 x 4 units for use on rough terrain |
| • |

… Boom Lifts?
Boom lifts are designed with a telescopic or articulated boom, to provide sideways outreach, allowing the work platform to gain access around and over obstacles. Models are available in a huge variety of sizes and features e.g.:
| • |
Working height of up to 40 metres |
| • |
Can be rotated around 360° |
| • |
Controlled from the work platform |

… Mast Lifts?
A recent addition to the AFI fleet is its range of electrically powered mast lifts. With their compact dimensions and low weight it enables them to operate safely in restricted spaces typically encountered in offices, retail stores, hotels, public buildings or crowded industrial aisles where a traditional scissor or boom lift is unable to manoeuvre. Certain units, due to their low weight, are able to be transported in elevators. Models are available with a variety of features e.g.:
| • |
Exceptional versatility for tight jobs |
| • |
Working height of up to 11 metres |
| • |
Many models can be rotated around 360° |
| • |
Non marking tyres for use on internal floors |

Machine Inspection
Every machine undergoes a pre-delivery inspection before being released for hire from an AFI depot.
| • |
If the machine fails the inspection it will not go on hire until it has been repaired and has passed a repeat inspection. |
| • |
Every machine in the AFI fleet is subject to a planned maintenance programme which meets the manufacturer's specification. |
| • |
Each machine in our fleet also undergoes a 'thorough examination' every six months. |
Other Safety Measures
| • |
AFI is always pleased to assist our customers with any information and help they may need. |
| • |
AFI recommends that all your operators are fully trained in the safe and effective use of powered access equipment. |
| • |
AFI offer training to IPAF or CITB standards, at convenient locations throughout the country. |
| • |
AFI issue an Operator's Safety Guide, endorsed by IPAF, on completion of any AFI training course. |
| • |
AFI offer a wide range of safety equipment available on line or through our depots.
AFI makes every effort to ensure that when you hire one of our access platforms it is as safe as it can be. Ultimately however, the hiring customer is responsible for the safe operation of the machine and the safety of those who could be affected by its actions. |
