The Sanctuary Zone from AFI is a ‘Tier 1
hierarchy of safety’ device that prevents the
operator of a Mobile Elevating Work Platform
(MEWP) being crushed against overhead
obstructions.
- The Sanctuary Zone is a simple, strong
and extremely reliable device comprising
steel frames that project above the
machine platform, preventing any
operator injuries from happening through
crushing, rather than reacting to the
crushing once it has occurred.
- The device has been developed and
constructed in full association with Haulotte
and Terex-Genie and has been fully
approved by those manufacturers.
- AFI has also worked closely with the HSE
in the development of the Sanctuary Zone
and has extensively trialled the device.
- AFI believes that the Sanctuary Zone is
one of the most important safety
developments in the powered access
sector for many years. We are so
convinced that it will save lives that we will
make it available to everyone, including our
competitors.
HOW THE SANCTUARY ZONE WAS DEVELOPED
- AFI developed the concept of the
Sanctuary Zone and produced initial
drawings before working closely with the
HSE and machine manufacturers
Haulotte and Terex-Genie to develop the
product.
- AFI carried out field trials which showed
that the Sanctuary Zone does not
impair the operators’ work in any way.
The trials did, however, lead to many
refinements to the design. The shape
was modified several times before the
optimum was arrived upon. Initially
the steelwork had a 90 degree angle on
the leading edge, which caught on
safety netting. AFI changed this to a
gradual curve and this has further
improved safety because the curved
rails keep the netting away from the
operator and prevents snagging. The
material used is the same size and
grade as used in the cage initially.
- AFI is also in discussions with several
other manufacturers about designs for
their machines
- Whilst the initial designs are for boom
lifts, AFI is also working with
manufacturers to adapt this and other
safety devices for fitting onto scissor
lifts
- At present the Sanctuary Zone frames
are attached to the machine but AFI
hopes that in the future they will
become an integral part of the
machine’s design
